Fact-Checkers: NOA’s Strategic Initiative to Curb Fake News in Nigeria
The rise of misinformation, disinformation, and fake news is an escalating challenge in our interconnected world. Recognizing the urgency of addressing this issue, the National Orientation Agency (NOA), in partnership with DAFUDA, the Center for Journalism Innovation Development (CJID), and the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), has initiated the 9th series of the National Fact-Checking Course in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
This three-day workshop gathers participants from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to enhance their skills in fact-checking and assessing the credibility of information. The primary aim is to equip these individuals with the knowledge and tools to identify and prevent the spread of fake news and hate speech. This initiative seeks to mitigate the negative impacts of misinformation on national unity, social cohesion, and economic progress.

In his welcome address, Garba Abari, the Director-General of the NOA, highlighted the agency’s 2021 5-year strategic plan, which ambitiously aims to train 37,000 fact-checkers nationwide, with a target of 1,000 individuals per state. This large-scale training initiative underscores the importance of creating a robust network of fact-checkers to maintain the integrity of information within the country.
